Christ on Hell - Every Verse Part 3
Part 3 - Christ on Hell/ Every Verse
Again. Jesus did not talk about Hell. He spoke about Gehenna.
Once again, Gehenna (that the King James version translated as Hell) is Valley of Tophet, or Hinnom.
When Jesus referred to Gehenna, He was referring to the then upcoming judgment and subsequent destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, which was God's wrath with fire burning Jerusalem and the temple.
It happened with the same unquenchable fire that burned Sodom or 185k Assyrian bodies thrown in the same fire pit (Isa. 30:31-33; 33:12) or the same fire judgement that Edom was thrown into (Isa. 34:9-10). This wrath fulfilled Jeremiah's prophecy about the Valley of Ge-Hinnon (Gehenna for short) Jer 7:32-34, Jer 19:1-15; Jer. 31:38-40 where it became a valley of slaughter with literal fire and dead bodies.
Luke 12:49 - Christ wished to bring fire on that earth (or the land), and he knew that the wicked servants, will be beaten with many blows, and assigned a place with the unbelievers.
That is why it was more bearable for Sodom, Tyre and Sidon than for Jerusalem. Jerusalem suffered the most.
It happened exactly as He prophesied.
It was where, some say a million Jews bodies were dumped and burned like common criminals outside Jerusalem in the desolation that occurred in AD 70 (Read Jer. 19 Matt 5:22,and Isa 66:22-24 )
Finally, Remember Hades (the other word for hell) was also cast into the lake of fire. Christ only used that word three times (Matt 11:23; Matt 16:18; Luke 10:15)
All of Jesus's Words on Gehenna
"Listed below are all the verses from the New Testament that use the word Gehenna. These verses are the King James Version, with the words "the valley of Hinnom" substituted for the word "hell."
After you read them I think you will agree that using the literal English meaning of the Greek word Gehenna (which is the valley of Hinnom), in these verses makes perfect sense. The one possible exception is Matthew 10:28, which I will discuss in a final post.
- Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the [Sanhedrin] Council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the [Gehenna] Valley of Hinnom fire.
- Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into the Valley of Hinnom.
- Matthew 5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into the Valley of Hinnom. <According to history whole bodies were indeed cast there when Jerusalem was destroyed>
- Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in the Valley of Hinnom.
- Matthew 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Valley of Hinnom fire.
- Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of the Valley of Hinnom than yourselves.
- Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of the Valley of Hinnom?
- Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into the Valley of Hinnom, into the fire that never shall be quenched.
- Mark 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into the Valley of Hinnom, into the fire that never shall be quenched.
- Mark 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into the Valley of Hinnom fire.
- Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into the Valley of Hinnom; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
- James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of the Valley of Hinnom.
