Gen. 19:30 – (chap) 20 The sin of Lot’s daughters / Abraham and Abimelech

TOPIC Throughout Scripture, Sodom was the poster child for eternal destruction right?

Throughout Scripture, Sodom was the poster child for eternal destruction right?

“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,” 2 Peter 2:4-9

So was Sodom and Gomorrah eternally Destroyed? Absolutely.

But Sodom and Gomorrah Restored? Of course not. No one comes back after judgment. They were burn with eternal fire.

Wait? What did you say Ezekiel?

“I will restore their fortunes, both the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your own fortunes in their midst, that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all that you have done, becoming a consolation to them. As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former state, and you and your daughters shall return to your former state. " [Ezekiel 16:53-55]

Hmmm.....

  • What was Sodom and Gomorrah’s sin though?

    • "Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as it was revealed to me. " [Ezekiel 16:49-50]

    • This was the report that God was investigating.  Does this surprise you, based on what you normally hear about Sodom and Gomorrah?

    • But yes part of it was their desire for committing wickedness against the two angels. “...as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7

  • since Christ... God does not destroy with flood, or wipe out whole cities... like he did of old. We are no longer under the Old Covenant. That's a good thing.

    • Now after Christ, Now in the New Covenant He does not need to operate this way. The great FOREVER RESTORER is here. He does not NEED TO BLIND anyone, take out anyone's eye, destroy a city to gave an excuse to restore.

    • Any destruction you see in the OT, God made Himself responsible to restore them ALL, Egypt, Assyria, even Sodom and Gomorrah. You don't hear preachers teach that don't you; yet it is in the Bible.

  • Jerusalem later became the new Sodom and Egypt, as wicked as they are in God’s eyes

    • "I came to send fire on the earth [ge - land, as in land of Israel], and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished! " [Luke 12:49-50]

    • Christ brought the fire, the refiner's fire. Fire literally burned Jerusalem as it did Sodom and Gomorrah in AD 70 when the temple mount burned and 1.3 million Jews died. It was eternal fire.

Gen 18

  • Yesterday we dealt with lots of war. Well, as with any good movie, what comes after war? Sex!   How else will nations rise and fall?

  • The Lord appeared… and behold he saw three men.. Hmmm. God can appear as three men at the same time and yet be one God.

  • Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”<-- This knocked me though.  Sarah was wondering if he would enjoy some coitus again, seeing that Abraham can’t raise the wood up to chop.  She wondered if he had some Canaanite Cialis.

  • Sarah was extra, but human.  She laughed and when called about it, she denied it.  God said, yes you did.  You see a woman is NOT always right. Men underline verse 15 please.

Gen 19:1-29

  • Observe Lot’s mixed response.  Don’t do this wickedness to these men, but you have my permission to do wickedness to my two virgin daughters. If you were one of his daughters how would you feel? No wonder they got him back later.

  • The men of Sodom exhibited xenophobia now, accusing Lot of being an illegal immigrant and wanting to know who made him judge over them. Hmmm. The two angels wasted no time striking them with blindness. Me? I would have castrated them. No peen for you.

  • Never realized Lot had son in laws.. And they did not consummate their marriage with his daughters? Hmm.  The son in laws thought Lot was joking when he told them the city would be destroyed.

Gen 19:30 - Gen. 20

  • Now Lot was only with his daughters, in a cave, his wife having turned into a pillar of salt.  The Jewish historian Josephus claimed to have seen the pillar of salt which was Lot's wife.[6] Its existence is also attested to by the early church fathers Clement of Rome and Irenaeus.[7]

  • How can you get so drunk you do not know you had sex with your daughters? That is some potent wine.  Is that date rape?  This is how Moab and Ammon was born, through rape and incest.

  • So can God stop someone from sinning? If He can stop a “heathen”, Abimelech king of Gerar, from sinning why can’t he stop everyone from sinning?  And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.  [Gen 20:6]

  • Abraham had a bad assumption. He thought God was only with him.  He did not realize by now God can be with anyone, even those he perceives as a heathen nation” “And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife. “ [Gen 20:11]
