The Meaning of Life Part 2

The Meaning of Life Part 2 - Does Life Really have a meaning?

We Must Be Real. There are certain realities that prevent Life from Having a Meaning

What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?”

We are trying to ascertain the point to life, but we observe certain maddeningly realities called “vanities” that makes this task tough and defeat having a long term purpose. They cause a circular existence that makes life pointless. Any nominee for meaning of life is it must be viable must defeat these foes to any long term purpose.

These are Life's vanities. These are the things that suck all meaning out of life, and makes it meaningless. The Meaning of Life must defeat the reality and pointlessness of
  1. Death as a certainty – Generations come and generations go but the earth remains forever. New generations can spoil all your work [Eccl. 1:4]
  2. Time as a cycle of endless repetition – [Eccl. 1:5] The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.
  3. A Bunch of Activity & Progress that amounts to Nothing in the Long Term[Eccl. 1:6] “The wind blows to the south and turns to north, round and round it goes ever returning on its course”
  4. The Constant Search For More/ But Nothing Really Satisfies or Create that Full Feeling and its ALL Wearisome[Eccl. 1:7-9] “7 All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. 8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.”
  5. Everything is the Same when you think about it. Nothing is New in the Final Sense. [Eccl. 1:9 – 10] “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one can say,"Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. “
  6. Nothing Really Lasts Forever, no Matter What You Do or How Much Your Name is on a Building. Legacy is Fleeting. Eccl. 1:11 “There is no remembrance of men of old, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered”
  7. The Problem of Evil/Corruption that brings to a halt any long lasting meaning [Eccl. 3:6] “And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment-wickedness was there, in the place of justice-wickedness was there.”

  • All pretenders to the meaning of life will show up when put to the test of the seven above.  Any meaning of life must defeat all seven above.  Don't you agree?
